Double Page Spread Production

Over a series of lessons, I produced my double page spread article on Quark. I have taken screengrabs to show each stage of making it:

Stage 1
Firstly, I added the title of the article which is 'REFRAIN YOURSELVES'. I then added the main picture of the band, and added a red frame. Once the picture was in the correct position, I placed on top, a quote from one of the band members.  I also added page numbers and the magazines name to the bottom right hand corner of each page. I did this because it is a typical code and convention of music magazines.

Stage 2
Next, I added the standfirst, which is situated underneath the article title. Once that was in position, I placed my second image in place, and added a red frame.

Stage 3
Next, I added the second image. This time of a different band member. Once in position, I added a red frame. I also tilted this picture a little to add variety to the page, and make it look a little more quirky and different.

Stage 4
I then added another picture. Again this picture was tilted, and I added a red frame. I used this picture because is shows Peter in the middle of singing which I think looks good, but also it is bigger than the other two. I wanted to use different sized pictures because I think it would look a little boring if all of the pictures are the same size, and all positioned the same.

Stage 5
I then added my final image to the article. This one is of the final band member. I used this picture because it shows him to be enjoying what he is doing. Again, I added a red border.

Stage 6
Once all of my images were in place, I could now import my text. I did this by drawing my text boxes, right click, then import. I also added a dropcap at the beginning of the article because this is a typical code and convention of music magazines. I changed the font to Calibri because I think it is a very simple font which makes it clearer and easier to read. Once the text was in place, I could change things. For example, I put the questions in capital letters, bold and red font. This is to make them stand out. Also, they are whole point to the article/interview.

Stage 7
The final thing to add to my double page spread was the drop quote from one of the band members. I chose this quote because I think it symbolises what the band is about: As much as they appreciate and like the money they receive, they enjoy playing, and love the atmosphere of the gigs they do.

I decided to edit my double page spread and change a few things in order for it to look more professional. The changes that I made were:
  • Remove 2 questions as they were not suitable/relevant to the indie-rock genre
  • Remove a drop quote as again that was not suitable/relevant
  • Have the text on one page, and pictures on the other
  • Added 2 new pictures in order to fill the whole of the page with pictures

Photographs for Double Page Spread

During my interview with Refrain, I took a number of photographs that could be used on the double page spread. However, on the actual article I will only have 7. Here are the photographs that I took:

Contents Page Production

Over a series of lessons I produced my contents page in Quark. Here are screengrabs of my work to show the stages in which it took to create my contents page:

Stage 1
The first thing I did was to add the title of my magazine, and the word 'CONTENTS'. I made this in Photoshop and then imported it as one image. Once that was in position, I added the magazines strapline, date and issue number.

Stage 2
I then added my main image of Becky Byrne. I have made it reasonably big because this is a typical code and convention of music magazines, also the main article is about her, so her picture needs to be bigger than the rest in order for it to stand out.

Stage 3
I then added my 'ON THE COVER' section of text. I produced the red tab type thing in Photoshop, and then imported it as an image. I made the page numbers red, and the top line of text bold to make it stand out.

Stage 4
Next, I added my 'FEATURES' section of text. Again, I produced the red tab type thing in Photoshop, and imported it as an image. I then made the page numbers red, and the top line of text bold to make it stand out.

Stage 5
I then added the 'REGULARS' section of text.

Stage 6
I then added the box of text on top of the picture of Becky Byrne. This contains the page number and the article title.

Stage 7
I then added my final image of Refrain. I changed the size of the picture and positioned it in the correct place.

Stage 8
The final thing for me to do was to add the box of text on top of the image. Again, this contains the page number and the article title.

I actually had to change my contents page to make it look a little more proffessional and exciting to look at. The changes that I made were:
  • Made the title and word Contents bigger
  • Add the slogan
  • Add the issue date
  • Make the image of Becky Byrne smaller (to allow room for other images)
  • Added 3 other images to the page, including boys (to show my magazine is suitable for both genders)
  • Change some of the features
  • Add new features

Photographs for Contents Page

In the lesson today I was given the task of taking the photographs for my magazine contents page. I took pictures of numerous people which will be featuring on my contents page. Here are the photographs that I took:

Front Cover Production

Over a series of lessons, I will be creating my music magazine front cover. I will be making it on Photoshop. Throughout the designing process, I will be taking screengrabs of my progress. This shows exactly what i did in order to complete the front cover.

This is the very first step to making my magazine front cover. I have selected my favourite image, and placed it in position. I have followed the codes and conventions of music magazines, by making sure the indivual has eye contact with the reader, and that the title of my magazine is placed at the top of the page, above their head.

Secondly, I have put a barcode on my magazine. I have rotated it round in order to fit on the text that will be running along the bottom of the page.

Next, I added the magazine's strap line which is 'Love the music, feel the beat', the date, the magazine's website and two of the storylines. For each of the storylines, I have made the Artist's name bold because that is what attracts the readers' attention.

Next, I added another two coverlines.

Then I added another two coverlines, however these were placed on the other side of the page.

Once I had made sure that all of my coverlines were lined up and in the right place, I added the red and black circle to emphasise the 'Free Download'. In order to get the effect of the two colours, I drew out a black circle and drew out a red circle, but made the red circle smaller to get the effect I wanted. I then dragged it into the position that I wanted, and thought looked best.

Once the circle was in place, I could insert the text that reads 'FREE Florence Download Inside'. I put each of the words on a seperate line to make it clearer and easer to read. Furthermore, I made the word 'FREE' bigger than the rest to emphasise the importance of the download being free, which in turn would attract the readers' attention.

Now that all of the coverlines were in place, I could insert my main coverline which is 'BECKY BRYNE "I may be new, but I'm certainly not shy". I made 'BECKY BYRNE' bigger because I wanted it to stand out, and to catch the readers' attention. I also put a little effect on the text by adding a white edging. I did this to make this coverline different from the rest. I wanted it to stand out. I added a quote because I thought this would help the readers relate to Becky as an artist. It also gives them an indication of what she is like as an artist.

Next, I added my piece of text along the bottom of the page. This is a list of artists that feature inside the magazine. I have added this because it is a common feature on music magazines, but also I think it would interest the readers and make them want to read my magazine, especially if their favourite artist/band is listed on the cover. I have put a little line/break inbetween each of the artists/bands, to seperate them and so they are clearer to read. The word 'PLUS' is a buzzword, which I have used to attract the readers' attention. Additionally, the word 'PLUS' and the lines inbetween the artists/bands are red. This links in with the colour scheme of my magazine.

The final thing which I added on my magazine was the date and issue number next to and above the barcode. This is a typical code and convention of music magazines, which is why I have done this.

I actually had to edit my magazine in order to make it look a little more professional. The changed I had to make were:
  • Changing the size and colour of the title and duplicating the layer
  • Editing the positioning and wording of a few of my coverlines
  • Removing the 'Free Download' graphic
  • Making the Becky Byrne coverline bigger
  • Editing the list of band across the bottom of the page
Here is my final front cover product:
