Codes and Conventions of a Magazine

FRONT COVER
  • Masthead: Title is full page width in a unique font
  • Issue Date and Price: Usually under the title or near the barcode
  • Single Image: Dominates the cover
  • Main Coverline: Largest text on the cover and anchors to who/what the picture is about
  • Coverlines: Different/Bolder fonts. Give the main details of what the article is about
  • Sublines: Give details of what the interview/story is about
  • Tagline/Slogan: Attracts the readers' attention, and helps the audience to establish each magazine. For example, Heat Magazine's slogan is 'This weeks hottest celebrity news'
  • Buzzwords: Words that attract the readers' attention e.g. plus, more, free




CONTENTS PAGE
  • Name of the magazine is at the top, along with the issue date
  • One main image which relates to the feature article
  • Smaller pictures relating to other articles/stories
  • Text is arranged in columns, usually 3 or 4
  • Page numbers (also on pictures)
  • Editors letter (sometimes)
  • Contents is divided into categories. E.g. Features, Regulars
  • Simple Colour scheme
